“It is so good for us to learn this!”

“It is so good for us to learn this… clock in, clock out, take a lunch, catch an earlier bus to arrive on time... We didn’t know how to do this before!” For refugees who are arriving in our country, even simple workplace expectations can be new and completely foreign to their lived experience.

We move fast here! American culture and especially a face paced city like Las Vegas moves at a pace that is much quicker than many other places in the world. For those who are assimilating into American life and entering our workforce, there is so much to learn and not a lot of time to learn it!

These three sisters are new to Lighthouse Charities and the U.S., having just arrived from Egypt, on December 12th, 2023. Suzie was born in South Sudan, and her sisters, Sarah and Lieth, in North Sudan. After their father’s death, their mother courageously took all five of her children to Egypt where they registered with the United Nations and began their 24 year wait before being able to immigrate to the United States last December.

Both their mother and father were teachers in Sudan and valued education. The sisters learned English in a school for refugee children in Cairo. Because of the job training programs at Lighthouse Charities, these sisters will be better prepared to succeed as they pursue their dreams and make a new life in our community.

English acquisition is a huge predictor of success for refugees. But workforce training is also an extremely important necessity! We are pleased to offer both of these tools to our amazing clients daily at Lighthouse Charities! And we are so proud of our courageous clients and their desire and determination to learn!
